By Erik Ma
Glacier
Adventure和Glacier
Skywalk。 Glacier
Banff
Gondola和Banff
Lake Cruise。
Ice
Explorers
Ice
Glacier
Adventure。
Canadian
My
Trip to Canada
(Day
5)
My family and I
rested on the fourth day (didn’t do much on the fourth we day, so I am just
summarizing it on the essay of the fifth day). We played card games and rounds
of tennis.
On the fifth day of
our trip, we went to Jasper National Park to visit the Columbia Icefields
Glacier Adventure and the Glacier Skywalk. We bought a super ticket at the
Glacier Discovery Center, which allowed my family to visit the two listed above,
Banff Gondola, and the Banff Lake Cruise.
My mom and dad chose
to do the Glacier Adventure and Glacier Skywalk this day because they were the
farthest ones. It took us four hours to get there by car. Since we had an extra
30 minutes before our Glacier Adventure ride, we went to the gift shop at the
center. My grandpa bought a few postcards and I bought a picture cube that has
picture of Banff scenes.
Shuttles transferred
us from the center to the Ice Explorers’ transit station on the mountain. From
there, people need to take Ice Explorers up to the glacier icefields.
On the way to the
glaciers, the driver or tour guide explained to us about the glaciers, how
everything was made, and the Ice Explorers. Ice Explorers are giant 6 wheeled vehicles
with1 meter wide and 1 meter thick tires. The capacity of each Ice Explorer is about
72 people or 36 seats. We were told that there are only a total of 23 Ice
Explorers in the whole world. One of them is at the Banff Gondola for display.
Another one serves at the US army as a moving equipment vehicle. The rest of
them are all at the Glacier Adventure.
The glacier lost
about 85% of the original glacier. There are predictions that the glacier might
disappear in the next century. If a person pours a cup of water down the peak
of the glacier, one-third goes to the Atlantic Ocean, 1/3 goes to the Columbia
River which leads into the Pacific Ocean, and the rest goes to the Arctic
Ocean.
After arriving at our
destination, everyone had 25 minutes to explore the glacier, feel the ice, take
pictures, get water, and lots more. Even
though it was still summer and it was sunny in Washington, it was raining with
freezing cold weather there, even with thick down coats on. There was a small
glacier water spring that people could get water from. After a while, the
driver took us back to the Ice Explorer Transit station, where we rode a shuttle
back to the center.
Then, we went to
another bus to go to the Glacier Skywalk. Once we arrived on top of the
mountain, we found out that there was no tour guides but electronic guiding
devices that provides multiple languages. We selected Chinese and we pressed
the numbers that each sign at the attraction said and the device will explain the
content of the sign. After we passed and listened to several signs, we finally
reached to the Glacier Skywalk’s major attraction, the Skybridge. It is a transparent
glass bridge that is about 918 feet above ground level with a great view of the
Canadian Rockies. This attraction just opened in May, of 2014. We were lucky to
visit this amazing architecture.
We returned to the
Discovery Center. My family was told that this center has one of the biggest
bathrooms in the whole world. It has 28 men stalls and 64 stalls for
women!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We then went back to our resort. It was another
fun day.
