Long ago, there was a lad, whose parents passed away early.
His big brother gave him an old cow. He went to work on the hills in the
daytime, and lived with the old cow at night. So people all called him “the
cowboy”.
The cowboy was not only diligent and tough, but also honest
and kind-hearted. The weaving maid in the heaven saw this and fell in love with
him. She came down from the heaven and married him. Later, they had a boy and a
girl, and lived happily together.
The Heavenly King’s mother learned this and was very angry.
One day, when the cowboy went up hills to work, the king’s mother sent soldiers
to snatch the weaving maid back. The coyboy couldn’t find the weaving maid when
he got home, and was very worried. Crying, the two kids wanted to find mom.
Just when the cowboy didn’t know what to do, the old cow suddenly started to
talk: “kill me quickly. Putting on my skin, you can then go to look for the
weaving maid in the heaven.” The cowboy killed the old cow with tears. Putting
on the cow’s skin, he went to the heaven, carrying his two children.
The cowboy was seen by the heavenly king’s mother. She
pulled her silver hairpin out of her hair, and drew a line. Right away, a
silver river appeared in the sky, and separated the cowboy from the weaving
maid. They were allowed to meet only
once a year on the 7th day of the 7th month of Chinese
lunar calendar. From then on, every year on this day, many magpies fly over to
build up a bridge so that the cowboy carrying their children get to meet the
weaving maid on the magpie bridge.
